Superhumans: How Teachers Use Graphic Novels to Improve Engagement in Student Learning

Project #248

Scott Allen

This researcher explores the impact on student engagement of including graphic novels as part of English or French language arts programs at the secondary level. Four teachers meet regularly to collaboratively plan and reflect on the use of graphic novels in their classes. The study found that students were prepared for class, completing their homework, on task and were offering deeper analysis of the novel than the teacher had offered. The participants also identified the importance of collaborative time with colleagues as an important aspect of trying something new within their classes.
